Deniz Vural is a doctoral researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, focusing on Arctic coastal dynamics and bathymetric mapping. Her work integrates scientific research with public outreach, emphasizing the importance of community-driven data collection and the role of the ocean in shaping polar environments. Deniz has been actively involved in international science communication and capacity-sharing initiatives, making complex environmental topics engaging and accessible to broader audiences.
The Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid change, yet much of its seafloor remains unexplored. In this session, Deniz shares insights from bathymetric surveys around Herschel Island–Qikiqtaruk, showing how mapping the seafloor deepens our understanding of coastal erosion, permafrost, and Arctic marine environments. Using accessible tools like low-cost sonar and GIS, the talk connects oceanography, climate change, and Indigenous knowledge to reveal the hidden topography shaping the Arctic’s past, present, and future.
Educators will discover how to bring real-world science into the classroom using practical tools and case studies from Arctic research. The session offers ideas for integrating mapping, environmental science, and Indigenous perspectives into interdisciplinary lessons that foster critical thinking, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of climate-related issues.
