Description
The Active Classroom Strategies presented by the Junior Cycle for Teachers service in Ireland are a collection of student-centred active teaching methodologies. The presented strategies are designed to support the development of key skills and competencies in students, such as ‘Managing Information & Thinking’ and ‘Working with Others’.
Each strategy is accompanied by a video introduction with a teacher implementing the strategy in the classroom and PDF teacher guideline instructions.
The Jigsaw Active Classroom Strategy is an example of a cooperative learning activity. Students form a home team and are set a home team problem. They break up into ‘expert groups’ and gain expert knowledge that feeds into the overall problem. Just as in a jigsaw puzzle, each student’s part is essential for completing and fully understanding the home team problem.
