While handling real-life problems and challenges, students can benefit from a roleplaying strategy, while embodying the multiple stakeholders’ perspectives. This methodology can be a powerful way to empower students to critically think about different aspects of the same topic and fruitfully discuss with their colleagues, presenting their arguments, exchanging data and reflecting on others’ perspectives. It is a powerful methodology for learning scenarios that invite students to be involved in community actions, to propose innovative solutions to existing real-life challenges, and to use their creativity to propose and support new ideas. It allows the smooth integration of social and cultural aspects of the students while being involved in their community reality. Educators can use this method to assess the student’s progress by tracking their materials organisation, their decision-making process, their arguments construction, the data acquired etc. Important competencies can be activated and assessed during a roleplaying scenario.
Below are a few suggestions of tools that can be used to support the integration of Roleplaying in your lessons:
This video discussion platform allows students to record and share their roleplaying activities. It’s great for creating a dynamic and interactive assessment environment.
Google Classroom can be used for organisational purposes as educators can assign different roles and create individual spaces, collaborative spaces, add video conferencing facilities and add feedback tools.
Classcraft offers parts of the tool for free. It can be very useful for educators willing to gamify the classroom experience. Students will assume different roles and complete designated quests.  It’s an engaging way to incorporate roleplaying into assessments.
