Every student has a journey to school—but not all journeys are the same. Some students ride the bus. Others walk for miles, bike through traffic, or get dropped off by parents rushing to work. Each route is shaped by challenges like safety, cost, weather, distance, and accessibility. In Commuter Voices, students will explore what happens when those voices come together to redesign how students get to school.
In this role-based scenario, students will take on the perspective of someone in the school community—like a student with a disability, a parent, a bus driver, a school principal, or a city planner. Each character has different needs and concerns. The task for the students is to work together to create a better school commute system that balances safety, fairness, cost, and the environment. Students need to listen to each other’s priorities, ask tough questions, and make decisions as a team. What’s more important—speed or safety? How do we make sure everyone gets to school, even in bad weather? Who decides how resources are shared?
This activity is about more than just transportation. It’s about understanding people, solving real-world problems, and thinking creatively about how systems work. Students will leave with a new perspective on something they experience every day—and a plan on how to improve it.
