The curriculum aims to empower children to become future leaders and inspire them to see how leadership and entrepreneurial spirit make a difference in the big issues of our time.

Over six lessons, students will develop the skills to creatively solve problems, listen openly and make their voices heard. They’ll also learn from real-world leaders spearheading change to address issues from the news.

Throughout, students will practice applying their knowledge and skills to challenges in their own communities.

The first lesson available here explores the concept of leadership and entrepreneurship with specific relevance to addressing sustainability challenges. The remaining five lessons are available to download from The Economist Educational Foundation website.

The lessons cover a range of topics over the six weeks, with students deciding on their own issues to become leaders for change on. The lessons topics are:

  • Leading Change in Sustainable Communities
  • Projects for Change
  • Presentation of Student Pitches

The resource is a special edition Topical Talk created by The Economist Educational Foundation, designed to inspire students and help develop essential critical-thinking and communication skills through informed and open-minded discussions about the most significant issues of our time.

This resource is designed for a series of 1-hour lessons with students. It contains

  • Ready-to-use, clear teacher instructions that are easy to follow
  • An accessible PowerPoint that’s clear, colourful and student-friendly
  • Printable, engaging resources with instructions on how to present them
  • Keywords and definitions to break down new or challenging vocabulary

Once students have been introduced to the concept of leadership for change and learned from the experience of other change leaders, they will identify their own local issues to lead change on.This resource may be a great starting point for an extended challenge-based learning approach.
